The organisation is coordinating an intercultural mentoring program : a space for exchange and dialogue between a person with a migrant background (mentee) and a ‘local’ (mentor). The project aims at promoting intercultural dialog, participation and social inclusion. Il offers an opportunity accessible to anyone wishing to get involved as an active citizen.

Our approach of mentoring programs supporting the inclusion of migrants

Individualised follow-up

P1080373The specificity of this mentoring practise is the parallel between individualised and collective dimension : the mentee can find a specific support for his/her personal needs through the mentor follow-up. Together, the mentoring pair defines needs, sets up objectives and build up a project, according their interests and the skills of the people involved.

All along the program, we maintain group dynamics through ice-breaking activities, and encourage a relationship based on mutual help and trust. We encourage the mentors and mentees to form themselves as a community, and to create bridges between each other’s communities and networks.

– Positive approach of diversity

longchamp1A space where the people are put together through difference, but where difference is transformed into a positive factor, a complementarily appealing for interaction and taking actions, in order to find solutions through collective strength. Mentees and mentors become share a potential of action for of their own success and future, they are called to find solutions to the needs they identify, using methods they can reuse throughout their lives.

Local context

Marseille is a particular city due to its geographic situation and its portal character. It is well known for being a cosmopolitan city. Its population, being financially modest compared to other by cities in France, have not been through the typical “gentrification” process. The city experience poverty in central areas as much as in neighbourhoods in the outskirt. Marginalisation and tensions often accompany the life of its population. Exclusion and social breach risk, eventually, to provoke a loss of confidence in others and in cultural diversity. Moreover, in Marseille like in other cities in France and the Mediterranean area, the rise of radicalism over the last couple of years reinforces tension and distance between people. Violence and hate speech made their way in the spotlights.

In such a context, it is essential to involve migrants and locals to look together for common answers and allow that each one, individually, feels responsible for the future of the community. It is very important to create spaces for dialog, for sharing on rights and duties and for the occasions to build together an inclusive and open society.

The mentoring program implemented by Hors Pistes lays its roots and methodology in the outcomes of the MentorPower project.

ImpressionMentorPower aims to pilot a model of « Engagement Mentoring », an innovative and sustainable program for migrant youth aged 16 – 25, for a two year period (2015 – 2017). The objective is to facilitate their integration, in particular on the labour market, through mentoring.

MentorPower is first of all an international cooperation project (a « strategic partnership » founded by Erasmus+) between France, Greece, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. We are six organisations, situated in harbour cities of Europe and the Mediterranean sea, which share a common interest for the themes of youth and mobility. Over a two year period we are combining activities on a local level and holding transnational meetings to develop a model of innovative and sustainable « engagement mentoring ».
